My final meal
Lately I've become aware of the fact that I am not normal. More specifically, I don't seem to have any sort of talent for or interest in repetition, routine or consistency. I look around me, and everyone I see seems to be fairly content to do the same sorts of things many days in a row. I must be stunted, because I can't even eat the same breakfast more than once. These traits of mine are drawbacks when it comes to jobs and relationships, but could possibly be considered assets in the food and travel writing fields. Now I just need to figure out how to exploit them...
In a halfhearted attempt to convince myself that I still have a shot at normalcy and that I am not in fact addicted to constant flux and over-stimulation, I am trying to document examples of routines or patterns in my life. So far, I've come up with two:
1) I take a shower every day
2) I eat at Akai Hana, in Wilmette, Illinois, at least once a month
I think I've eaten at Akai Hana more than any other restaurant over the course of my life thus far. For awhile I was addicted to this place in London called EuroTandoori, in a gross neighborhood right near the King's Cross tube stop, but that was truncated after one year when I had to move back to Ohio. Akai Hana has remained a steady habit despite my many migrations.
I won't testify that it's the best Japanese food ever, but it's solid. And it's close to home.
So, here's the meal that I frequently order; a meal that is so comforting and familiar to me at this point that I think I would elect to have it for my final meal if I was on death row: the beef teriyaki combination. 3 nigiri (salmon, tuna, shrimp), 1 California roll, a small cup of miso soup, sunomono, beef teriyaki, lots of sticky rice, a pile of shredded cabbage that soaks up the teriyaki so nicely, and a scoop of green tea (or chocolate, if they're out) ice cream.

What would your final death row meal be?

I think I would start with the Chicken Soup from the Annam Cafe. I would then have the Roast Duck Bamee from the Thai Sookdee. For dessert, I would have the most insane piece of carrot cake that humanity has ever seen, with some cheese-cake flavoured ice cream on the side.
And a coke.
I can attest to the non-routine thing. I am horrid at eating leftovers, for no other reason that it is the same food I ate yesterday. I'd go somewhere new and try something new over something safe and steady, even if I pretty much knew the new thing was going to be bad. So I am definately on the same page about that. The only thing I eat regularly is calzones from Savario's, a glorified closet run by a man and sometimes his grown kids in Portsmouth NH - just awesome. He closes when the dough runs out, takes sunny summer days off, and is just great. I eat them mebbe once a month. But my death row meal, this week at least, would be cooked by Thomas Keller. Not that I've experienced his cooking before, but I figure, death row, I'm gonna ask for something that's a big deal.
Melvin - I need to try the Annam Cafe. Everybody says it's so great...and I agree with you about anything involving duck. Duck is a food of the gods.
The Thomas Keller strategy is a good one. Very clever! You're right, why not aim for the top. Is it too late for me to change my mind??
I'm going to tell my friend in Hanover about Savario's - I think he's desperate enough for good food that it might be worth the trip someday! Although maybe he should call in advance...
good food feasts are to be had in Portsmouth - but mapquest sez Hanover and Portsmouth are two hours apart. But, as a really good day trip it is a fun city, on the sea, and really really amazing food at many restaurants - perhaps a lil' weekend trip for your friend?
(ps. this is folkie. i changed my blogger name 'cuz when i first set up my account I was just messing around in order to set up another blog for my work. so i finally switched to the name i really wanted.)
hey Folkie! now i understand. yeah, portsmouth is a bit of a drive, but hey, where else are ya gonna go from Hanover? I guess Boston, maybe...
We had a great dinner in Portsmouth about a year ago. It was in a little tiny restaurant on the second floor of a very old building...I can't remember much else, but we had soft shell crabs that were delicious. Do you know what place I'm talking about? Kind of a stretch... but it had a great vibe to it. Very intimate and cozy.
I'll actually be in NH next month. If you have any other hot food tips, we could use them! :)
Appetizer: Buffalo Joe's - Double Order Hot with Two Gutbuster Seven-Ups
Main Course: Full Rack of Carson's Ribs
Dessert: Tombstone Pizza
Mmmmm...just thinking about it makes me wish I were in jail right now.
I certainly wouldn't make something else die just because I was about to.
My final meal would be tofurkey with a giant pile of cranberry sauce, and mashed sweet potatoes, and raw sugar snap peas.
