Back from Crete
Here are some photos from my recent trip to Crete. I travelled from Matala to Loutro to Hania to Agios Nikolaos over two weeks. I ate fresh, honest food, was muscled off a hiking trail by goats, evaded endless slugs of raki, acquired a very respectable tan, made new friends, and learned how to cook traditional dishes from a sweet Sfakian guy named Stratis.

You went back to the land of my people? Did you eat any saganaki or taramasalata? Did Stratis teach you how to make spanakopita and does he use leeks in his? I want to know more!

How gorgeous! I am totally consumed with envy....love the goat pictures!!
i'd kill for a tan right about now, respectable or not.
Hey Erin -
That's right, I forgot you're Greek! Didn't we swap skordalia tips in past posts? We didn't eat any saganaki; we may have had taramasalata once. My mom was on this trip-long trek for skordalia that was thwarted until she "special ordered" it in advance - apparently it's so garlicky that tourists never ordered it, so it's been permanently removed from practically every menu on Crete. Heartbreaking!! But really, we need to discuss raki. Do you like it?
Hi ME - You too, what's up with the raki? How am I supposed to drink that stuff? I tried plugging my nose and everything. It got so bad that when they would plunk it down in front of me, just looking at it made me sort of queasy!
Hi Laura - Well, I have a tan, but it doesn't do me much good now that i am back in my cube. I'd rather NOT have a tan and be in gay Paris! :)
Hello!
I just landed on your blog as I was doing my own sort of career search. I have found it very inspiring, fun and informative. I'm really interested in what you are doing at the moment and your thoughts on the Ritz culinary program (I looked into it years ago when I first stayed in Paris - since then I've gone back and forth teaching English). Help I live in San Francisco and am looking for inspiration regarding the food industry, etc (I've been obsessed for years but never really have taken the plunge). Any comments? Thank you - Katie yougreezybastard@yahoo.com
Oh, whoops! Did I not tell you? You're supposed to burn the raki...LOL. Seriously, I think you have to open your mouth very wide and toss it as far back into the back of your maw as possible...
