Mysterious coconut blobs
I picked up a package of extremely cute little Thai sweets at our local grocery recently. I thought the name of them was listed on the package, but it turns out that the label only referred to the bakery in the East Bay that made them.

Each one came wrapped in a little palm leaf that was carefully stapled into a cup shape, and was comprised of a gelatinous coconut blob that had been doused with a bit of coconut cream. I couldn't stop eating them; I love the balance of sweet and salty in Thai sweets and the coconut cream had just enough salt to counter the sticky, sugary qualities of the ball.
If anybody knows what these are called, please let me know! I did some searching but couldn't find out their name.

I lived in Thailand for a while and ate innumerable sticky coconut blobs. I never heard them referred to as anything but "khanom Thai", which means Thai-style snacks/treats, but occasionally people would elaborate and call them "khanom waan" (sweet snacks) or "khanom waan ma plao" (sweet coconut snacks). If you were to ask a Thai person for a khanom waan, for example, you'd likely end up with the coconut blob or a similarly-blobby sticky rice ball, also wrapped in banana leaf.
Wow, fantastic! I never thought I'd get an answer so fast... :)
Yum! I'd love to try one. What grocery store was it / what was the name of the bakery? I've never seen one but would be willing to search far and wide. : )
I got them at New May Wah on Clement Street in SF, near the cash register. I can't remember the name of the bakery itself, but I think it was wholesale only in Oakland or Berkeley...
That's one of my favourite Thai desserts. It's called Ta Ko.
Here's a blog post with the recipe:

:)
wow, what a great blog post on Ta Ko. so neat to see how they're made. but these didn't have corn or water chestnuts in them, I think...are there other desserts that look similar but have a different filling? yummmm.
