Formerly, Tank Pho occupied a cute little storefront buried deep within Argyle Street. The tables were blond wood, the television was always tuned to Vietnamese music videos, and a succulent display of fresh fruit lined the front display case, awaiting conversion into bubble tea and smoothies.
Now Tank has moved to a more prominent position at the corner of Argyle and Broadway. It has expanded and is perhaps four times the size of the old space. I don't begrudge them their success, but I sometimes wonder why we keep returning. There is no ambiance, no cuteness, just a vaguely institutional setting with too many big tables and not enough little ones. The waitstaff is permanently distracted. Their pho is still excellent, but there are other places down the block with the same quality.
